PUMPING PERIL TO THE PACIFIC
By Roman Vazhenkov

With an estimated cost of $11 billion to $17 billion, the Pacific pipeline will be Russia's largest infrastructure project to date. With a total length of over 4,188 kilometers, it will be the longest oil pipeline in the world. And there is another area where the project is competing for first place: environmental damage. TALE AND REALITY

For the first time in the 140-year history of the Moscow Zoo we would like to open for the guests of our photo-exhibition those doors on which it is usually written "No entrance". You will be given an opportunity of seeing the zoo by day and night, in summer and in winter, you will also have a chance to see our animals, including animal-parents with their babies, when visitors do not look at them. We will show you their love and tenderness to each other and you will witness both funny and sad things in their lives.

Probably, some of you will recognize yourselves at the enclosures with animals and some of you will be surprised at sell-sacrificing work of people who devote their lives to the zoo.

It is you, who will decide if we reached our purpose.

Unfortunately, conditions of three halls do not allow us to show you everything we wanted to, but we hope that the exhibition will inspire a lot of respect and interest towards Moscow Zoo – the place you all know from childhood.

THE TENTH FESTIVAL "ECOLOGY. CREATIVITY. CHILDREN"
March 20 – 27, 2004
Applications and artwork can be submitted until March 6, 2004

During the last nine years the festival improved, acquiring new friends and participants, but its goals and purposes have remained the same: looking for ways for children to understand ecological problems through their own creativity and promoting the activities of children's groups that are oriented towards understanding ecological problems.

Over 2000 children from different parts of Russia took part in the festival in 2003.

The festival was organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, the Council for the Preservation of Birds of Russia, the All-Russian Center of Artistic Creativity of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the Moscow Zoo and the Children's Theater "Tick-Tack". All the organizers of the festival realize that only now we are starting to regain the feeling of being part of the huge world that lives according to its wise and proper laws.

The ten-year history of the festival provides an opportunity to think about the past and to look into the future. But there can be no doubt that ecological problems, the problems of achieving harmony between man and the environment, are the most critical problem of the modern times.

The organizing committee of the festival is especially grateful to the publications that are providing informational support to the festival – "The Teachers' Paper", the paper "the First of September" and the magazines "I Enter the World of Art" and "Your Leisure".

2004 is an anniversary year not only for the festival, but also for the Moscow Zoo that is going to be 140 years old, and because of this the organizing committee is starting to arrange the artwork exhibition of the festival for the museum of the Moscow Zoo, and it reserves the exclusive right not to return the artwork by prize winners and the artwork that has received special prizes.

For the whole period of its history (140 years) the Moscow Zoo has remained the centre of the cultural life of the city. Students of Moscow Art Institutes and colleges regularly come to the Moscow Zoo; societies, workshops and a children theatre are attended by thousands of visitors every year.

The exhibition "In the Memory of Friends" was opened on 24th December, 2002 in the Exhibition Hall at the main entrance to the Moscow Zoo. It will be open to public until March 2003. The exhibits displayed are the works of the founders of Russian art of animal painting (V. Vatagin, A. Komarov, P. Balandin) and their followers.

Most of the works of these artists were created at the Moscow Zoo, and while watching the paintings you meet face to face with the species of our zoo collection. On the lithograph of V. Trophimov, the visitors to the exhibition can be acquainted with a memorable description of an elephant putting out an incendiary which accidentally fell inside the enclosure during II World War.

Some of the exhibits remind the visitors of the recent tragic events related to "Nord-Ost" performance: a young painter N. Yakubenko, whose works are also presented, was among the hostages who died in the Theatre Centre on Dubrovskaya Street.

DAY OF EARTH

Day of Earth, one of the most exciting and remarkable events which are traditionally held in Moscow zoo, took place on 20 April this year. It is already 30 years that this event is celebrated at international level.

All the visitors are supposed to bring alarm clocks and meet at the Tree of Fairy-tales on the old territory at noon. The ringing sound of all the alarm clocks at a time symbolises the "voice" of our Planet that tries to wake people up and make them aware of the necessity of nature protection. After this ceremony, the visitors are offered different educational and entertaining activities such as zoo quiz, lectures, lottery and many others.

In March, 1998 the specialists of "Terrarium" have carried out an expedition to tropical forest of the Sumatra island. The aid of the expedition was to catch the red-headed krait (Bungarus flaviceps). This snake is extremely rare, insufficiently known and is difficult for keeping in captivity. During the expedition two pairs of kraits were caught and safely transported to the Moscow zoo. All snakes feel well and now have greatly exceeded maximal life span in captivity known for this species.

In August, 1998 the expedition of the Circle of Young Biologists of the Zoo (CYBZ) to the Putoransky reserve (East Siberia) was held. The summer expeditions of the CYBZ are carried out annually, however, in 1998 due to financial support of the Global Ecological Fund, which has allocated the special grant, the group of nine young naturalists and three principals managed to get to the hard-to-reach and insufficiently known district of East Siberia. During the expedition investigations of the avifauna and the fauna of small mammals around the Lama lake were conducted. The ecology and behaviour of Altay picas (Ochotona alpina) was also studied. This species forms here a unique population separated from the main areal more than on 1500 kms.
