white spoonbillNearby to the – "Goat Hill" there is a "bog" – a natural small pond surrounded by dense brush wood. The employees of a zoo try to support its natural state because it is the best place in the zoo for keeping of pelicans and cormorants. In the summer eastern white pelicans (PELECANUS ONOCROTALUS), dalmatian pelicans (PELECANUS CRISPUS) (PELECANIDAE), and great cormorant(PHALACROCORAX CARBO) (PHALACROCORACIDAE) inhabit this pond.

A new pavilion for bog birds looks on this pond. scarlet ibisThe birds of this pavilion in the wild inhabit swampy territories and are notable for their long feet and long beaks. Beaks may be of various forms. Grey herons (ARDEA CINEREA) (ARDEIDAE) pray small fishes and frogs with their straight spear – shaped beak. Beaks of white spoonbills (PLATALEA LEUCORODIA) (THRESKIORNITHIDAE) resemble a small shovel. These birds dexterously filter water in a coastal zone, taking up small water organisms. In bright scarlet ibis(EUDOCIMUS RUBER) (THRESKIORNITHIDAE) beak looks like a small pipe and it leted down to suck in various small animal from coastal ooze.
The beak of purple swamphen (PORPHYRIO PORPHYRIO) (RALLIDAE) is not long and resembles chicken. The bird is beautifully coloured and its strong beak is necessary to get coastal plants.

The marsh turtles (EMYDIDAE) have been settled in the ponds of the Moscow Zoo long ago. They have got accustomed to the new living conditions. Now in warm summer days they usually crawl out of water to bask in the sun. The area of marsh turtles is significantly to the south of Moscow, nevertheless they successfully hibernate in our zoo every year.
