We are proud of an enclosure for large birds of prey. This enclosure built on the side of the large pond surrounds an artificial high rock.

Steller's sea eagleSteller's sea eagle (HALIAEETUS PELAGICUS PELAGICUS) (ACCIPITRIDAE), is one of the most rare and valuable inhabitant of this enclosure included in the Red List of IUCN. This species is found only at Far East coast of Russia. The first offspring in captivity was obtained in the Moscow zoo in 1987. Now these eagles breed regularly. Sea eagle differs from other eagles with massive beak and powerful paws with long hooked claws; as they prey on large fish. Sea eagles always build their nests on trees and rocks not far from a seashore to make the distance to hunting places shorter. In the Moscow zoo their diet consists mainly of fish.

In the wild the eagles occur in open habitats. They have an excellent sight and usually look for the prey from large height. Their diet consists of various rodents, but golden eagles (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) (ACCIPITRIDAE), are capable to prey on young ungulates. Specially trained golden eagles are used sometimes as a hunting bird to hunt on hares, foxes and even the wolves.
