lion-tailed macaque with her babyThe lion-tailed macaque(MACACA SILENUS) (CERCOPITHECIDAE) has rather unusual appearance. These macaques occur in tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests in south-western India. They form groups usually of 10-20 animals with the adult dominant male at the head. Lion-tailed macaques are arboreal and occasionally come down from trees. Their diet consists of nuts, flowers, tree shoots, larvas of insects, spiders, eggs of birds and small vertebrates.

This species seems unable to adapt to human disturbance and is declining in numbers. It is very rare and is classified as endangered by the IUCN.

These macaques have been acquired by the Moscow Zoo recently, but they've already started to breed.
