Cotton-headed tamarinsThis attractive, miniature bare-faced monkey, with a crest of white hairs extending back over the head is named Cotton-headed tamarin (SAGUINUS OEDIPUS) (CALLITHRICIDAE).

Cotton-headed tamarin inhabits tropical forests in the north-west of Colombia. These monkeys are found in different localities and can survive even on plantations of a sugar reed, but dense secondary forests are their most typical habitats. These forests are felling by people therefore the species is listed as endangered on Appendix 1 of the CITES.

The diet of this tamarin includes fruits, some tender vegetation, insects, frogs, juice of trees and nectar. Tamarins form family groups. Each group has it's home range and pass round it some times per day. The role of females in rearing of offspring is reduced practically only to lactation. The rest of the time the young clings tightly with their hands and feet to the body of father. Youngs (especially males) may stay in native group as the helpers. It is beneficial to the group as a whole, as "padding" males help to raise youngs, so they survive better. After young females reach sexual maturity, their mother usually push them away from the territory.
