Musk ox (OVIBOS MOSCHATUS) (BOVIDAE) is an amazing animal as it resembles both sheep and bull. Its name originates from males' musk glands with specific sharp smell. Musk ox is found in tundra of North America, Greenland, and since recently they also live in tundra of Taimir peninsula and Vrangel island in Russia where climatic conditions are very severe. For this reason musk ox has massive body and the lengthy and dense coat covering its legs almost down to hooves.
Musk oxen form herds consisting of 10-20 individuals. When enemy approaches, the members of a herd form a circle with females and calves inside while massive horns of bulls provide effective defense against wolves and bears. As hunters with firearms can easy kill musk oxen the species has been exploited by humans for its meat during long period. Uncontrolled hunting led to decline in numbers and distribution and only special conservation efforts and breeding of musk oxen in captivity allowed to introduce animals in some areas beyond the original range in Eurasia.
