barnacle goose
The pond of the New territory is famous for its brushwooded islands with nest-boxes for waterfowl birds. Rare barnacle geese (BRANTA LEUCOPSIS) (ANATIDAE) usually nest there. These geese are not large, their black-and-white colouration is contrast. Barnacle geese occur in Greenland, Sitsbergen, in Russia – on the south of the New Earth islands and the Viegach island.

waterfowl birds in the pond of the New territory As nesting places they prefer mountain landscapes and rocky banks of streams and lakes. Nestling colonies ranging in size from 6-10 to 75 pairs are situated at the distance of several dozens of meters from each other. Barnacle geese often settle near to the nests of birds of prey or colonies of sea birds to protect their nests. Many common goldeneyes (BUCEPHALA CLANGULA) (ANATIDAE) nest in hollow-boxes hung near the pond. In the wild these birds build nests only in trees' hollows. The species is territorial, probably because of the deficiency of places suitable for nesting. Every family occupies a particular part of the pond and responds very aggressively to the intrusion of other common goldeneyes. So, only two or three broods can be brought up on the pond every year.

Black-necked swans (CYGNUS MELANOCORYPHUS), white geese (ANSER COERULESCENS) and many other waterfowl birds live on the pond of the New territory. In summer hot days the numerous schools of large carps come to the surface of water attracting attention of visitors.
