There is a special enclosure for flamingo (PHOENICOPTERIDAE) on the large pond. These unusual and very beautiful birds usually occur in Africa, Eurasia, and South America where they inhabit shoals in deserts and savannah. Flamingo's diet consists of small invertebrates: crustaceans and molluscums. Searching for food the bird sink its head into the water, curving a neck in a special manner. To preserve red and pink colour of feathers the diet of flamingo in the zoo must include forages containing Carotinum.
Greater flamingo (PHOENICOPTERUS ROSEUS) and american flamingo (PHOENICOPTERUS RUBER) are kept in the Moscow zoo. Recently they have been transferred to a new exhibit and we hope they'll begin to nest in future.
